At one point or another, we can all become the victims of manipulation.
Whether it comes from a friend, a co-worker, a family member, or a spouse, this should never be allowed to happen.
Here are some tips on how to combat manipulation:
1. Identify it and address it accordingly
The first key step you need to take in order to deal with a manipulator properly is to learn how to spot them. There are many forms of manipulation you should be aware of if you want to be able to shield yourself from harm. Some manipulators tend to put their needs first while expecting you to be on call should they need you. Others will guilt-trip you into doing things you would not normally do, and so on.
2. Ask questions
Manipulators seek to control you. Hence, asking them questions will help you grab the steering wheel while you reduce their influence on you. When you ask them about details of what exactly they want from you, you will be able to see their true motives and expose them for who they really are.
3. Learn to say No
This may be your best weapon to beat a manipulator at their own game. When you say no to someone who is trying to manipulate you, you will make them lose control and cause them to panic. They may start fighting with you and calling you names. In addition, expect them to try to badmouth you in front of others as a means of revenge. Some of them will never talk to you again, but wouldn’t that be great?
4. Use your time wisely
However, if you are having difficulties with saying ‘No’, try using time to your advantage. For instance, tell them you need time to consider what they asked of you.
