7 tips on how to live a meaningful life

Happiness and inner fulfillment are much more attractive than emptiness, and this makes life with some kind of meaning one of the widest held goals in the world.

Most people measure their success through meaningful actions, whether they realize it or not. You will find that all of human history is obsessed with life meaning – starting from philosophers and scientists to the ordinary person. And while a single answer on how to live a meaningful life does not exist, there are several things you can do to get closer to this goal.

The following steps are actions you can take to help create a meaningful life for yourself.

These steps will help you clarify and identify the things you want to do and sacrifices you are prepared to make in order to achieve them.

Remember, living a life with meaning is not about doing everything, but about doing what matters most.

1. Clarify What’s Important To You

While we all have priorities on what’s important and what’s not, pinpointing them is something you must do by yourself. Once you determine the 5 most important things that you find to be vital to your happiness, use them to live your life as you want it. If you like playing music, turn it into a career. If family life is what matters most to you, focus on spending more time with them. In short, pursue your passions in life. The world is your oyster.

2. Be Self Aware

Keep track of yourself and your own actions. Be mindful of what you do at all times, making sure you are living life in accordance with your principles, your purpose, and your passions.

Evaluate your actions each day, and take note of those that strayed from your path. This will help you correct and prevent any potential future incidents.

Additionally, Meditation can greatly increase our self-awareness, making it a great tool for accomplishing such tasks.

3. Nevermind What Others Think

Many of us spend too much precious time worrying about what other people think of us. While you certainly wouldn’t want to disrespect others; you have been born to live your own life; not theirs. At times you may need to seek the opinion of the people who are close to you, but in the end, it is still only an opinion, and you are entitled to disagree.

That being said, if somebody does not hold any importance in your life, you should not let them dictate to you in any way whatsoever. And while you may choose to listen to what they have to say, remember, if they get upset when you don’t do as they think, that is entirely their issue, not yours.

As long as you are doing what you feel is right to live a meaningful life, you have nothing to worry about.

4. Help Others

That does not mean that you should focus all your life actions to help the rest. But giving to others will help you find more purpose and meaning. Focus on the things you find important, but also make sure to help those in need when you are able. In turn, this will increase your and their life satisfaction. Oftentimes, something as simple as lending a friendly ear or a shoulder to cry on can bless your life with more meaning.

5. Spend Your Finances On People More Than Things

Often, we are seduced by thoughts of buying material goods. While there is no pain in that, it is recommended that you consider what you purchase with care, and try thinking more about spending your hard earned money on experiences with friends and family. By focusing on your relationships with those dear to you rather than on material wealth your life will not only gain deeper meaning but you will also become a happier person as a result.

6. Be Courageous

Living a meaningful life requires courage. Ultimately, you will need to make changes to achieve this, dive into new experiences and put yourself out there. You can find courage by determining the essential actions to improve your way of living. Do not be afraid to try something new or different – none of us can achieve our biggest goals without taking risks.

7. If You Want To See The World Change, Start With Yourself

Be the example others would like to follow. Start behaving in a way others find admirable, and thus become a small force for change in the world.

Before criticizing your colleagues or employees for being late for work, make sure that you are being a good example of proper time management. Before criticizing others for their lack of compassion,  make sure you are behaving in the most compassionate manner.

People tend to follow the good examples they see. So, if you want to see things change, start with yourself.
