In 2017, Selena Gomez underwent a kidney transplant, and this year, she is no longer ashamed of her scars.
Back in 2015, the star revealed that she had been diagnosed with lupus, a systemic autoimmune disease. When her lupus attacked her kidneys, she was forced to undergo a kidney transplant. Gomez admits that it was her best friend Francia Raisa who had saved her life as she volunteered to give her her kidney. At the time, it was seen as a miracle to have her best friend not only volunteer but also be a match for the transplant. Speaking to TODAY’s Savannah Guthrie, the two friends discussed their experience and described it as one of the most difficult things they have had to go through.
This year, Selena Gomez uploaded a picture on Instagram, showing off her scars.
In the interview with Guthrie, Gomez explained that there were complications with her kidney transplant; as a result, doctors had had to get a vein from her leg and build a new artery to keep her kidney in place. The scars which her transplant had left can be seen in the photograph she uploaded on her Instagram. Furthermore, she shared her thoughts and feelings about her kidney transplant as she explained that she will no longer conceal her scars. Instead, she is now embracing and accepting her body for what it is. Alongside the photograph, Gomez added the following caption:
When I got my kidney transplant, I remember it being very difficult at first showing my scar. I didn’t want it to be in photos, so I wore things that would cover it up. Now, more than ever, I feel confident in who I am and what I went through…and I’m proud of that. T – Congratulations on what you’re doing for women, launching @lamariette whose message is just that…all bodies are beautiful.
