Songbird will tell the story of a world battling COVID-23.

It was expected that sooner or later, a COVID-19 inspired thriller would be announced and finally, it has been. Songbird, from filmmaker Adam Mason, is set to be the first film about the pandemic. The film will be a Coronavirus movie set in 2024 where COVID-23 has mutated. According to Entertainment Weekly, in the film, COVID-23 will have a mortality rate of over 50% and the virus will kill at an accelerated rate. Moreover, the world would be in its fourth year of lockdown and American citizens will be dragged from their homes to quarantine camps if they have been infected.

KJ Apa will be starring as Nico, a frontline courier who has COVID immunity.

Riverdale’s KJ Apa will star as Nico, a frontline courier who spends his days doing deliveries around the city. Although the film will be dystopian, dark, and terrifying, it will also be about love and hope. Songbird will tell the story of Nico and Sara (Sofia Carson) who fall in love, even though they cannot meet. While the film will show a dystopian world, it will also have elements of realism. Filmmaker Adam Mason spoke to Entertainment Weekly and said that the things he was inventing were coming true as he was writing the plot of the film.

Adam [Goodman] would say to me, “You can’t have a curfew, that’s too dystopian — no one will believe it.” Literally the next day there were helicopters flying over my house with loudspeakers saying, “Everyone in their homes. Curfew’s starting.”

Songbird will be a film that inspires hope.

Mason further commented on the new thriller as he said, “It’s a dystopian, scary world, but it’s a romantic movie about two people who want to be together, but they can’t. It’s Romeo and Juliet, but they’re separated by her front door and by the virus.” Sofia Carson, the actress starring as Sara, also spoke about her character’s strength as she noted that despite the fear that she could be seized and dragged to a quarantine camp, there is not one second in which “Sara feels like the damsel in distress”. She further explained:

Even though she’s lost everything, she is a warrior of hope. She represents this young generation of fearless men and women who are holding onto hope and who are the real true leaders, who will lead us into the future.

When filming, strict health and safety measures were followed.

In order to keep the cast and filming crew safe, production ensured that everybody followed strict health and safety measures. LadBible reported that production introduced zones for the crew, had regular testing, and kept a small crew of less than 40 people a day. Surprisingly, the entire film was shot in just 17 days. While the film sounds absolutely anxiety-inducing, Sofia Carson believes that the movie’s message will be one of hope.

Even though this is the pandemic thriller and it’s suspenseful and terrifying, the heart of a story is hope. It’s the hope that is represented in Sara’s character and the love between Sara and Nico. In our never-ending dark night, the songbird sings a song of hope.

The release date for Songbird has not yet been set.
