Narcissists are self-obsessed.
Often, they dominate conversations, manipulate those around them, and use tactics of deception for their own gains.
We try to stay away from such poisonous individuals, but we also fall prey to their manipulation. So, what methods do they use to control you?
Here are 5 sneaky techniques narcissists employ to control their victims:
1. Gaslighting
Gaslighting is a form of mental manipulation where the attacker uses several psychological and emotional tricks to intimidate the victim, make them believe they’re losing their mind, or in short, turn the victims against themselves. By stripping people from their power to think clearly and distorting their reality narcissists get nearer and nearer to fulfilling their plan to control.
2. They play the victim
If anyone is to run after the victim title in a situation of conflict it is the narcissist. In their eyes, they are always in the right and you are always the abuser. Even when the narcissist clearly is the one to blame, they will twist and bend the truth in order to make themselves the victim while you end up apologizing to them. Once again…
3. Ignoring the subject
Do not be surprised when such a manipulator heartlessly changes the subject you were so keen to talk about. They just cannot bear living in the shadows. Should you confront them over something they did, they won’t miss the chance to get back at you, armed with insults and ugly lies. That is the level of self-centeredness they carry inside.
4. They make you feel worthless
Should you decide to disagree with a narcissist, they will do whatever they can to punish you and criticize you to the point of making you feel guilty and worthless. All of a sudden, each one of your qualities they told you they love is now toxic to them. This is how they try to gain back control.
5. They bring a third person in, if necessary
If the narcissist has set their sights on winning an argument, they don’t hold back on using the dirtiest tactics just so they can step on you. This also includes bringing in a third person in the conversation so they can make you feel bad in their eyes. They will do anything they can just to have people on their side and come out on top.
