A 22-year-old Slovenian woman from the city of Ljubljana was sentenced to two years behind bars after she cut off her own hand to claim insurance money.
The woman’s 30-year-old boyfriend, who reportedly convinced her to do it, was given three years in jail by the Ljubljana District Court on September 11, as per local news station STA.
It isn’t clear if the couple, who had pleaded not guilty, would appeal the court’s decision.
The woman, Julia Adlesic, was arrested for reportedly cutting off her own hand at the wrist with a saw to get around €400,000 (US$470,000) of insurance money.
The woman reportedly staged the incident, along with three other people, a short while after they signed life and injury insurance contracts with five different companies.
Adlesic believed she could get around €380,000 of compensation and a life-long monthly payout of about €3000 authorities reported.
The group left the severed hand behind on purpose when they went to the hospital, in hopes to receive three times the compensation amount for permanent disability after what the woman claimed was an accident, police said.
Thankfully, authorities were able to pick up the hand in time, and doctors were able to reattach it.
The average salary in Slovenia is about €1,000 ($1185).
