TV show uses virtual reality to ‘reunite’ mother with her little daughter who died in 2016
A South Korean TV show reunited a weeping mother with her dead seven-year-old daughter through virtual reality (VR) so she could deal with the pain.
Meeting You utilizes virtual reality technology to simulate the appearance of dead relatives for people who are struggling with the loss of their loved ones.
The participant is given touch-sensitive gloves and a VR headset thanks to which they can see, feel and even hear the person they have lost.
In the newest episode, Jang Ji-sung can be seen reuniting with her daughter, Nayeon, in a relaxed magical world, where she is playing.

Nayeon passed away in 2016 following a rare illness.
Recreating via a computer the way Nayeon acts looks and talks, Jang is seen in tears as she’s asked if she ever thinks about her little girl, to which she responded: ‘All the time.’
Nayeon then says: ‘I missed mom a lot,’ and the pair hold hands and play together.
She then gives her mum a flower and says:
‘Mommy, you can see that I’m not hurting anymore, right?’
Like something out of black mirror…

At the end of the surreal meeting, Nayeon drifts off into sleep and allows her dear mother to say farewell.
The touching encounter was filmed while the mother’s husband and two children watch on with tears in their eyes.
Later, Jang described her experience in her blog:
‘Three years later, I now think I should love her more than miss her and feel sick so that I can be confident when I meet her later.
‘I hope many people will remember Nayeon after watching the show.’
She continued saying that she hoped her experience will help other families dealing with the death of a loved one cope with their loss.
The show is part of the program of the Minhwa Broadcasting Corporation (MBC), South Korea’s most prominent network.
