Second coronavirus wave could be deadlier, CDC chief Robert Redfield warns

Robert Redfield, the head of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), is warning people of a second wave of COVID-19 that could coincide with the beginning of flu season.

He believes that this might be more dangerous than the current coronavirus pandemic we are experiencing.

In an interview with The Washington Post on Tuesday, Mr. Redfield said that the public should act with care and, even as some areas are currently trying to reopen their economies, to keep following the pandemic guidelines.

Mr. Redfield noted that social distancing has helped enormously with the containment of the outbreak, but believes people must plan for the future and possibly get a flu shot in the summer so that when winter arrives, hospitals will not be as overwhelmed as before.

He continued saying that the precaution

“may allow there to be a hospital bed available for your mother or grandmother that may get coronavirus.”

The COVID-19 crisis has overburdened hospitals all over the globe, caused a disaster in morgues due to insufficient space for the dead, and showed how unprepared we are when it comes to ventilators and protective gear for medical workers and others fighting on the forefront of the pandemic.

Mr. Redfield added that if we are to avoid another horrific pandemic situation, which has caused the deaths of 45,343 and infected 819,175 in the United States alone, the CDC is charging the workforce that is handling public health problems with the task to accommodate and properly plan for a second outbreak.

The CDC is to add 650 more people to the already existing 500 personnel across the country to “substantially augment” the public health response when all states begin rolling back stay-at-home rules and have employees to reenter the workforce and resume a normal life.

More personnel is required and the CDC is considering bringing forth field workers intended for the Census Bureau – which stopped its operations until May due to the coronavirus pandemic – in addition to the Peace Corps and AmeriCorps to create “an alternative workforce,” it read.
