As per ABC News, two students and one adult were injured in the shooting. Thankfully, the students – a boy and a girl, had non-life-threatening injuries but had to remain in hospital overnight. According to officials, they may need surgery. Meanwhile, the adult had to be rushed to Eastern Idaho Regional Medical Center but was later released in a stable condition.

The girl who opened fire was a sixth-grader. Her motive is yet to be revealed. The sheriff’s office said that two people were shot in a school hallway before she moved outside, and another person was shot.

A teacher managed to disarm the shooter and held her while waiting for the police.

Jefferson County Prosecuting Attorney Mark Taylor assured that after the investigation is complete, his office will be filing “appropriate” charges. They would allegedly include three counts of attempted murder.

After the shooter was taken into custody, students were moved to a nearby high school.

Superintendent Chad Martin commented:

“This is the worst nightmare a school district could ever face. We prepare for it, but we’re never truly ready for it.”

Although the school district won’t be holding classes on May 7, there will be counselors offering support at the local high school.

Lucy Long, a sixth-grader at the school, said she heard pounding on her classroom door. It was followed by two gunshots, screams, running in the hallway, and a third gunshot that sounded farther away. Talking to Idaho Falls ABC affiliate KIFI, the girl said:

“I was really scared. I almost started crying, but I was trying to help my other friends that were crying feel better. We were so worried that someone was going to come in after they were pounding on our door, like they were going to try to get in and hurt us.”

“I am praying for the lives and safety of those involved in today’s tragic events. Thank you to our law enforcement agencies and school leaders for their efforts in responding to the incident.”
