According to the definition provided in Wikipedia Integrity is the characteristic of remaining honest and holding powerful moral principles or moral uprightness.
It is the personal choice to hold one’s self to consistent standards.
However, So-Young Kang a serial entrepreneur, catalyst & founder of Multi-Disciplinary Transformation Design (TD) Firm Awaken Group thinks that integrity is one of the most misunderstood and misused words. Here is what she says:
“Integrity stems from the Latin word ‘integer’ which means whole and complete. So integrity requires an inner sense of ‘wholeness’ and consistency of character. When you are in integrity, people should be able to visibly see it through your actions, words, decisions, methods, and outcomes. When you are ‘whole’ and consistent, there is only one you. The person that brings that same you wherever you are, regardless of the circumstance. You don’t leave parts of yourself behind. You don’t have a ‘work you,’ a ‘family you,’ and a ‘social you.’ You are YOU 24/7.”
So what is basically explained above is that integrity is the act of manifesting your true self all the time. And according to Mrs Kang, it is not easy to do this. Here is what she adds:
“Given the real definition of integrity, we recognize that it is actually extremely difficult to be in integrity 100% of the time. We aspire to be in integrity with what we believe but sometimes, we mess up. Sometimes, our emotions get the best of us and we are unable to intentionally manage our behavior and actions. Sometimes, we don’t give ourselves permission to be our true selves out of fear of what others may think or due to an inability to truly ‘integrate’ the various parts of ourselves into ONE, complete WHOLE person.”
It is not easy to act with integrity all the time. But the more difficult question is whether or not you actually possess this special quality.
To make things easier we have prepared a list of the 10 most remarkable qualities of people who possess true integrity:
1. People with integrity are unique because they have a whole cluster of important human virtues.
These people are kind and unpretentious. And they are always reliable and trustworthy. They believe in the truth, even if it is the difficult one and even when it doesn’t suit their point of view. And they are never scared to support it.
2. They would never manipulate you.
These people live to help and assist others. They also strongly believe one can never be happy at the expense of someone else and would never take advantage of anyone or manipulate others. That is why a person who possesses true integrity makes the best friend who is always there for you and would never take advantage of you.
3. They prefer to see the good in others and to trust them.
They believe that no matter how bad a person might be, their good side will prevail sooner or later. That is the reason they believe in the good. However, they also truly believe in the motto “Once I catch you in one lie it makes me”. Despite the fact they started trusting you quickly if they understand you have been lying to them, they will be immediately disappointed and could end the relationship.
4. They are ready to apologize.
They are really humble and always trying to become better. If they have done anything wrong or have hurt you even unintentionally, they would apologize, and correct their mistakes. They are always ready to admit that they did wrong.
5. These people are the most helpful.
They are very helpful people and want to spread positive vibes. All of them believe that the true meaning of life is doing good for others. A person with true integrity could be the most helpful people you have ever met.
6. “Kindness rarely costs anything, but its worth is immeasurable.” is their motto.
They are kind and always try to lift other people up whenever they can. If other people are in need, they are ready to give them a hand. And they would always treat others with kindness and compassion. However, people who possess integrity are seldom aware of their own worth.
7. They avoid conflicts.
Such people don’t like fighting and would do everything to solve any problem peacefully. They behave like this because they are understanding and prefer discussing things politely. They wouldn’t make a problem about petty things, and people respect them because of this.
8. People with integrity are the most honest ones.
People with integrity never pretend to be someone else just to be accepted. They detest lying and try to stick to the truth. So, they might be the most honest friends you could ever have in your life. That makes them perfect partners who never lie to you just to make things look better in your eyes. And on the top of that, they would find the most delicate way to tell you the truth.
9. They understand the value of time.
These people appreciate your time and would never waste it. They know that:
“Unfortunately, the clock is ticking, the hours are going by. The past increases, the future recedes.” (Haruki Murakami )
That is why they would never deliberately involve you in activities that would waste your precious time. And they are always grateful to those who chose to spend their time with them.
These people are intuitive and are able to sense what’s going on in someone else’s mind. They are able to see other’s true colors and become easily aware when something is going wrong with someone. And since they are very empathetic they always listen and try to help.
If you know people who possess true integrity, you are lucky and you should appreciate them because they are not so many.
And if you are one of them yourself, you have reasons to be proud of who you are!
