Pastor Mistakes Petrol For Holy Water, Blows Up Church

Lagos, Nigeria: At least 6 people including two kids lost their lives in an oil pipeline explosion ignited by a priest who mistook petrol for holy water last year.

The thick smoke could be seen over Gloryland Estate in Isheri Olofin on the outskirts of Lagos.

In an interview for AFP, Ibrahim Farinloye of the National Emergency Management Agency said at the time:

“The pastor picked a keg believing it contained water not knowing it was filled with petrol.”

“In the process of emptying the contents on the man, a lit candle nearby sparked fire that engulfed both of them.”

The church fire, which took place in the Baruwa area in the north of the city also ignited the nearby oil pipelines.

The pipelines had reportedly become extremely dangerous after they were vandalized by criminals.

“We have recovered the body of a man. He was burned beyond recognition, while another person (the pastor) was injured with severe burns,” Farinloye said.

In the heat of the accident, the head of Lagos state emergency service, Femi Oke-Osanyintolu, said:

“Only one body has been recovered, while the other person who was injured is receiving treatment.”

Unfortunately, the area has experienced a number of pipeline explosions so far, as can be heard in the footage below.

Hopefully, the problem has been resolved by now.
