‘Grim reaper’ stalks Florida beaches to remind locals of the coronavirus threat

Florida, US: An attorney named Daniel Uhlfelder is working on making those in denial fear death by wearing a grim reaper suit and walking around the beach to make people more aware of the COVID-19 threat.

David started his “Grim Reaper Death Tour” at Miramar Beach in Walton County, Fla., last Friday, after advertising it on Twitter in April.

He appeared in full grim reaper gear, which comes with a black mask, gloves, and a fake scythe.

“I’m here today to try to make a point that we need to — I think it’s premature that we open our beaches,” David said, in an interview with ABC13 at the beach.

“It’s too soon and it’s not appropriate,” he said.

The lawyer was interviewed while wearing his grim reaper outfit, after which he handed back the microphone and stood creepily behind the reporter.

David is using his beach tour to raise cash for any Democrats who run against sitting Florida Republicans.

In addition, he hopes that his actions will make people more aware about the vital importance of social distancing.

“Nobody is a bigger advocate of public access to state beaches than me — I love our beaches — it’s one of the reasons I choose to live here,” Uhlfelder said.

“But we must act in a thoughtful and sensible manner.”

A number of beach attendees were unhappy to see the reaper walking around the shore, and some of them told him to go away.

“I think he should go somewhere else because he don’t belong here,” local man Al DeAngelis told WKRG.

18-year-old Gary Winthrop said the man dressed as Death was making a mess of his first trip to the beach since the coronavirus cut his spring break short.

“I don’t think it’s cool,” Gary said.

David said that he doesn’t mind not being popular as long as he can save lives.

“If this can get one person to take this more seriously, then I feel I’ve done what I can,” he said.
