Doing Things Alone Doesn’t Make You A Sociopath: It Sets You Free

When you see someone having lunch at a restaurant on their own, you might feel sad for them. But you don’t have to.

Because they are possibly having as good of a time alone as they would if they were with a friend.

And there truly are many people who do not mind doing things alone, and I can honestly say that I belong to that group. Yes, I’m one of those people that you see in the movie theatre eating popcorn alone or drinking coffee at the cafe alone. I am the one you see having a blast at a concert alone.

And I don’t feel ashamed of doing things on my own. I even enjoy it.

The truth is, the more time I spend on this planet, the more I realize how freeing and empowering doing things on your own can be. And that doesn’t mean that I also don’t long to be with other people. But it is often surprising to me how many people see doing things alone as something that should be frowned upon. To them, it automatically means that you are a weirdo or a sociopath. But I’m here to tell you that this kind of thinking is wrong for so many reasons.

Some time ago I was ashamed of doing things on my own.

For instance, anytime I wanted to do something I enjoy, for example, go to a music event or to the theatre, I would always ask someone to come with me. And if they could not make it, I would just stay home and marinate in my disappointment.

And there are so many other things that I’ve had to miss out on just because I felt shy about doing them on my own.

However, currently, I’m at a stage in life where I don’t mind what other people think or say about me. No longer will I allow others, and also myself, to hinder me from doing all the things that I enjoy.

Believe me – having fun on your own does not make you strange. It does not make you a loser. It can, in fact, set you free.

Having fun doing things alone shows courage and a spirit of independence. It shows that you don’t mind what others think of you. It shows that you have set your sights on taking each opportunity in life and making the most of it.

The truth is, not everyone will always be up to doing the things you want to do and they won’t all have the same interests as you. Not all of your friends and family would be willing to go on an adventure and experience new things.

People won’t always be able to look at things your way and you need to understand that doing things on your own can have powerful and liberating effects on you.

It lets you see the world in different ways – ways you’ve never been aware of. It permits you to eliminate all the unwanted distractions so that you can become one with the present moment. It lets you do things at your own pace and volition.

Doing things on your own teaches you independence and helps you understand that you are the main person responsible for your own happiness.

So, go on and don’t be shy to enjoy everything this sense of freedom has to offer. Make the trip you’ve always wanted to make. Go to see your favorite band. Tick those dream boxes one by one and see yourself becoming more satisfied with who you truly are.

Don’t be afraid to do things on your own and experience life to the fullest. Keep on creating those wonderful memories!
