Bath, UK: After receiving an unexpected fine for driving in a bus lane, David Knight knew this had to have been some kind of error…
…because he hadn’t even been to the city of Bath and lives 120 miles away, in Surrey.
But when he and his wife, Paula, did a closer inspection of the photo “evidence,” they were in for a real surprise.
The image showed a woman walking in the bus lane with the word KNITTER on her shirt, which the computer had mistaken for the personalized registration plate on David’s Volkswagen van – KN19TER, a tribute to his own nickname “Knighter.”
Eventually, Paula got in touch with the council to let authorities know they’d made a mistake, and thankfully, they had a sense of humor about it and canceled their £90 fine.
Even though the alleged offense happened back in June, David received the fine just last month.
Recently, Paula, who is a mother of two, said that the person who answered the phone “burst out laughing” when she told her about what had happened.
“The fine had already gone up from £60 to £90 because we hadn’t paid within 30 days,” she said. “Obviously no one had looked at the picture and it had been computer generated.”
David went on to say:
“We’ve been laughing about it a lot. There was no way I was going to pay for a woman walking in a bus lane with a funny T-shirt on!”
