Clearly now a target? Christian cake maker sued a third time for discrimination

A baker from Colorado, U.S., who won a Supreme Court case over his refusal to bake a wedding cake for a homosexual couple is now facing a third lawsuit over claims of discrimination.

Owner of the Lakewood Masterpiece Cakeshop, Jack Phillips, is once again being sued by Denver attorney Autumn Scardina, a transgender woman, for his refusal to make a cake blue on the outside and pink on the inside to “celebrate [the seventh anniversary of her] transition from male to female” as it goes against the teachings of his Christian faith.

According to the June 5 complaint, Phillips is being accused of discrimination against LGBT community members for his refusal to bake the cake, despite him stating multiple times he would sell “birthday cakes” to anyone from the general community, including the LGBT community.

Phillips’ lawyer, Jim Campbel, senior counsel for Alliance Defending Freedom, who represented him in other cases called the case another attempt to harass the cake artist.

“So this latest attack by Scardina looks like yet another desperate attempt to harass cake artist Jack Phillips,” he told Fox News. “And it stumbles over the one detail that matters most: Jack serves everyone; he just cannot express all messages through his custom cakes.”

Campbell made clear that even though Phillips is happy to serve all customers, including the attorney who filed the complaint against him, but does not make cakes that express messages celebrating events against or in conflict with his faith.

“Over his years as a cake artist, Phillips has declined to create cakes with various messages that violate his faith, including messages that demean LGBT people, express racism, celebrate Halloween, promote marijuana use, and celebrate or support Satan,” a press release said in January.

This latest lawsuit bypasses the state of Colorado and instead requests a trial by jury.
