North Carolina authorities are conducting an investigation after a 12-year-old boy gunned down two masked men, killing one of them in the process, after they entered an apartment and shot his grandma.
Police responded at around 1 am last Saturday to a report of a shooting in a residential area. They found 73-year-old Linda Ellis with a bullet wound. They also found a man who had also been shot near an intersection.
The woman and the intruder were then taken to Wayne UNC Health Care hospital. The suspect, who has been identified as 19-year-old Khalil Herring from Goldsboro, died from his wounds.
According to authorities, the two intruders entered the home, demanded money, and shot the grandmother in the leg.
Her grandchild then shot at the men, causing them to run away, police said.
“They came in the house, I open the door, I open it, and they came in there. … One guy had a gun. They just put me down on the ground,” said Randolph Bunn, the lady’s son, and great-uncle to the child.
The woman was in the kitchen when the robbers attacked her.
“I don’t know why they shot her,” Bunn said.

Authorities said the boy was not charged but the investigation is ongoing.
The intruder “just shot his grandma,” Bunn said.
“He would have shot him too, he would’ve shot me too. He would’ve killed us all.”
