Big Mac, the most adorable pup you’ll see today, became a resident of the animal shelter in December 2020, as per Unilad. Unfortunately, as his previous owner was moving town, they couldn’t take him along, and they decided to leave him at the sanctuary.

Although workers at the shelter were unaware of the pupper’s life before he arrived, they noticed he was anxious around new people. Speaking to The Dodo, Lauren Mann, advancement manager at the animal center, commented:

“We’re not really sure what his living environment was like prior to coming to us, but it was very apparent that he didn’t trust everyone right away.”

But this little challenge didn’t stop the shelter’s staff from taking care of Big Mac and giving him the love he deserves.

Thankfully, the four-legged creature managed to gain confidence and became more comfortable with the new settings. Mann said:

“He did warm up with treats and when he was out of the kennel and in the play yard.”

Sadly, for a long time, there was not a family willing to take Big Mac home. He eventually became the longest-standing resident at McKamey Animal Center.

But one kindhearted volunteer agreed to foster the pooch and found that he felt so comfortable with her, that he slept for 12 hours straight on the very first night. Mann explained:

“[He] just really opened up and wanted to play with her other dog and even wanted to play with the cats. [He] really made a 180 and was a great dog overall. Her resident dog took him under his wing, and when they were out for a walk and he’d get a little scared, her dog would be like, ‘No, it’s OK.’ And he’d show him that it was OK and people could be trusted.”

This life-changing experience created a strong bond between Big Mac and his foster parent.

Their connection was so powerful that she could no longer imagine life without him. That’s how the charming four-legged hero of this story found his forever home.

The animal center recently shared footage of Big Mac finally walking out of the shelter after 260 long days. The staff can be seen applauding the pup, who couldn’t wait to go home to his new owner.

Mann said:

“His new mom was surprised that he handled it so well, which shows that he’s doing a lot better with stranger danger. He was just ready to go… he didn’t really care about treats or pets or anything. He was just ready to go home.”
