Abandoned dog with the word “FREE” written on its fur in permanent marker

In case you are no longer able to take care of your pet, please make sure it goes to loving hands. Or at least give it to the local animal shelter.

Leaving your once beloved four-legged friends on the streets is an act of cruelty. Unfortunately, many people just stop caring for their pets and ditch them on their own.

That’s exactly what happened to this abandoned dog.

When the rescuers found it, they were heartbroken.

This lovely Lab-mix puppy was found in Yoctangee Park Chillicothe, Ohio, in May 2018. Unlike many dogs where it takes time to realize whether it’s a street dog or an abandoned pup, in this case, people immediately noticed the dog was ditched by its former owner. It was written all over its body with a permanent marker.

The dog had the words “FREE”, “Good home only”, and “I am a gift from God” written on its little body.

Brittany May from the Ross County Humane Society posted several photos of the dog. She wanted to show this cruelty to the world. In the post she says:

“I usually try to contain my self with my work life and with what I see every single day, but this just tops it off! How are you going to dump your dog, and write FREE all over it in permanent marker! I just don’t get it!”

She also adds with disappointment and confusion: “This is a whole new level of LOW!”

Luckily, the poor dog was now in good hands.

The staff of Ross County Humane Society named the dog Marvella.

Although Marvella was left in the hot beginning of summer, and many dogs struggle to survive in that weather, she was luckily unharmed and got all the care she needed from the humane society. The staff worked hard to get the marker off her fur.

Sarah Cantrell, office manager and adoption coordinator at the Ross County Humane Society, said for TODAY:

“She’s healthy and sweet and thankfully did not suffer from heat exposure.”

Fortunately, Marvella’s story has a happy ending!

She has found her new forever home with her new loving owners Linette Wrightsel and her family. As per Cantrell:

“We’ve had a lot of interest in Marvella… a family that had put in an application got approved and came and adopted her.”

The dog’s previous owner, Kendra Stafford, has been charged with cruelty to animals, abandonment, and failure to license.

It is indeed a happy new beginning for the lovely Marvella, but there are still many animals that need our help. The Ross County Humane Society are hoping people would raise awareness.

“Please remember that in any shelter on any given day there are dogs who have been given away as ‘free to good home’ and are awaiting their forever home, just like Marvella. Please support your local animal shelters and adopt, don’t shop.”
