Despite all the scientific advances humanity has made, romantic attraction, to a large extent, still remains a mystery.
However, thanks to some experimentation, researchers have come up with numerous ideas about what draws people to each other.
In the particular list below we’ve compiled some of the findings regarding the traits and behaviors that make men more appealing to women.
1. Step up your humor
It isn’t a secret that women find men with a good sense of humor more attractive. A French study found that a man who told a joke to his friends nearby before approaching a woman was three times more likely to get her number and was seen as more intelligent and attractive.
2. Play hard to get
Women run for the hills when they see a man who appears needy. Playing hard to get will make you more mysterious and alluring. There’s a reason women often fall for the bad guys…
3. Present yourself as high status
A University of Wales Institute study from 2010 found that men pictured with a Silver Bentley Continental GT were seen as much more attractive than those pictured with a Red Ford Fiesta ST.
Another study from Cardiff Metropolitan University in 2014 found that men pictured in a posh apartment were seen as more attractive than those in a control group.
Men, on the other hand, don’t see women as more attractive when they present themselves as high-status.
4. Keep your teeth pearly white
The universities of Leeds and Central Lancashire found that non-white teeth were seen as hugely unattractive, while straight white teeth were ranked as the most attractive.
On an evolutionary level, a potential partner’s teeth can indicate the health, diet, as well as childhood illnesses. So, if you do have a problem with your teeth, maybe now is the time to do something about it.
5. Look for an equal
Both sexes are attracted to people who are as attractive as they are.
In a 2011 study from the University of California at Berkley, researchers looked into the behavior of 60 straight men and 60 straight women on a dating website.
They found that while most of them would rather get in touch with highly good-looking people, they were most likely to get a response if that person was in their own category of attractiveness.
Should you choose to go for a partner much more attractive than you, you might end up worried about being replaced. If you go for someone much less attractive than you, you might end up thinking you could do much better. The bottom line is, going for someone who is on your level of attractiveness can help you avoid these things.
6. Grow a short beard
In a University of New South Wales study from 2013, researchers had 177 straight men and 351 straight women go through pictures of 10 men in one of four conditions: clean-shaven, short stubble, heavy stubble, and full-grown beard. The men were rated on their attractiveness and women found the most attractive men in the pictures to be those with short stubbles.
7. Hit the gym, but don’t overdo it
In a University of California study from 2007, 286 women who looked at the photos of half-naked men gave their answers to which ones they would prefer as long and short-term partners.
The men with bigger muscles were chosen only as a short-term option while less muscular men were deemed as better prospects for long-term relationships.
8. Show some pride in yourself
Research from the University of British Columbia in 2011 found that straight men and women prefer different emotional expressions in potential romantic partners.
In one of their experiments, the team had around 900 female adults look at pictures of men on the web.
The team was specifically looking at people’s perceptions of expressions of happiness, pride, neutrality, and shame. When it came to the women’s evaluation of men, the most attractive expression was pride, and the least attractive was the signaling of happiness.
The expression of shame, strangely enough, was about as attractive for both men and women.
