What Exactly Happened On January 5, 2020, That Caused Every Person On The Planet To Be Stretched And Compressed?

What cosmic event caused every person on the planet to be stretched and compressed for less than one second?

A TikTok astrophysicist has revealed the answer to that strange question.

Australian astrophysics graduate Kirsten Banks answered people’s plead for knowledge on her TikTok account, where she regularly shares plain-language insights on topics of space and astronomy. According to her, on January 5, 2020, gravitational waves caused by a black hole that swallowed a neuron star made their way to our planet.

She went on to explain that these waves mess with the fabric of spacetime, and when they pass through Earth, for a spec of a second, all human beings are stretched and compressed by 1/10,000th of the size of a proton, or about 30% of the size of human sperm (in case the cosmic catastrophe took place 1 light year away from our home).

Banks also explained that this is not the first time scientists have spotted these gravitational waves.

According to her, the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory (LIGO) has “detected more than 50 gravitational waves since the first detection in 2015.”
