In a country where the majority of the population has dark features, blue eyes are extremely rare.

Multiple members of an indigenous tribe in Indonesia have dark hair and striking blue eyes.

This rare appearance is caused by a condition called Waardenburg Syndrome.
Korchnoi Pasaribu, an Indonesian geologist and photographer, has captured mesmerizing photographs of the Buton tribe.

Waardenburg syndrome is a rare genetic condition which affects about 1 in 42,000 people.

According to Healthline, this rare condition affects the color of a person’s skin, hair, and eyes and it may cause hearing loss. While people with Waardenburg syndrome tend to have pale eyes, some may have two different-colored eyes. This is known as heterochromia iridis and although it is a symptom of Waardenburg syndrome, it can occur without the presence of the condition. There are four types of Waardenburg syndrome and they are all triggered by the mutations of different genes. When people with dark features have this condition, they look unique, extraordinary, and incredibly beautiful as the pale blue eyes contrast with their dark hair.
