- Matthew McConaughey could be the next Governor of Texas, as he confirmed he could be running for the post.
- The actor said his political career is “a true consideration.”
- If McConaughey runs for Governor of Texas in 2022, he would be competing against the current Governor, Republican Greg Abbott.
Since The Gentlemen actor Matthew McConaughey has previously hinted about his political aspirations, him potentially running for Governor of Texas may come as no surprise to many.
As UNILAD reports, the 51-year-old Hollywood star revealed his intentions during a recent appearance on the Crime Stoppers of Houston’s The Balanced Voice podcast. While the Texan actor was promoting his memoir “Greenlights”, host Rania Mankarious asked him whether he was considering running for governor. McConaughey responded:
“It’s a true consideration. I’m looking into now again, what is my leadership role? Because I do think I have some things to teach and share, and what is my role? What’s my category in my next chapter of life that I’m going into?”
This was not the first time the Interstellar star has shared his ambitions for pursuing a political career.
In November 2020, McConaughey told The Hugh Hewitt Show:
“I don’t know. I mean, that wouldn’t be up to me. It would be up to the people more than it would me. I would say this. Look, politics seems to be a broken business to me right now. And when politics redefines its purpose, I could be a hell of a lot more interested.”

The actor added:
“I want to get behind personal values to rebind our social contracts with each other as Americans, as people again. No matter what side of the aisle you’re on, or as I said earlier, denomination, we have broken those social contracts. We don’t trust each other, and that leads to us not trust in ourselves, which if that becomes, if that becomes epidemic, then we’ve got anarchy.”
While commenting on other celebrity politicians, McConaughey questions, “how much you can really get done in politics.”
The actor said:
“I remember when Arnold [Schwarzenegger] came out and seeing [Jesse] Ventura up there, I was like oh, there’s different people in the entertainment zeitgeist that are getting into politics. You know, I still question how much you can really get done in politics, and I don’t know if politics is my avenue to get what maybe I am best equipped to get done.”
In case McConaughey runs for Governor of Texas next year, he would be competing against Republican Greg Abbott, who is up for re-election.
