What makes the connection between humans and dogs so special? Science says love!

What makes the bond between humans and dogs so exceptional?

Can our pets experience love as we do?

Once, psychologists denied the idea that animals can feel the way humans do, but now the tables may have turned. Here’s why.

A new book from the author Clive Wynne, founder of the Canine Science Collaboratory at Arizona State University, argues that the relationship between a dog and a human being is one of the most significant interspecies partnerships in history.

The author of the book “Dog is Love: Why and How Your Dog Loves You.” began his studies on the subject in the early 2000s. Similar to his peers, he believed that ascribing complex emotions to dogs is not quite rational. However, his mind has completely changed by a piece of body evidence that he simply couldn’t ignore. According to Phys.org, Wynne says in an interview:

“I think there comes a point when it’s worth being skeptical of your skepticism.”

In the past two decades, canine science has been enjoying a revival of the idea about dogs’ intelligence.

Many titles, such as “The Genius of Dogs” by Brian Hare, have firmly supported the belief that dogs are, in fact, incredibly alert and perceptive. On the contrary, Wynne argues that it’s not brilliance what makes canines so special. It’s love.

The canine psychologist states that unlike dolphins’ understanding of grammar, or wolves’ ability to follow human cues, dogs haven’t shown significant abilities defining their intelligence. He proposes that it’s dogs’ “hyper-sociability” or “extreme gregariousness” that makes them exceptional. In other words, their love for us humans is what makes them so compassionate.

Additionally, scientists have proved that oxytocin, a brain chemical that seals emotional bonds between people, is also responsible for interspecies relationships between dogs and humans. The thesis clarifies in a recent study by Takefumi Kikusui at Japan’s Azabu University. Kikusui’s research shows that when humans and their dogs gaze into each other’s eyes, their oxytocin levels rise, similar to the effect observed between mothers and their babies.

In 2009, UCLA geneticist Bridgett vonHoldt made a surprising discovery.

She found that dogs have a mutation in the gene, responsible for Williams syndrome in humans.

The Williams syndrome is a condition characterized by developmental challenges and a markedly outgoing personality. Wynne explains:

“The essential thing about dogs, as for people with Williams syndrome, is a desire to form close connections, to have warm personal relationships—to love and be loved.”

Furthermore, behavior testing is one of the most certain approaches that give insight into dogs’ real nature. For example, in a test, researchers were using a rope to pull open the front door of a canine’s home and placing a bowl of food at an equal distance to its owner. What this test showed, is that the animal’s initial instinct is to go to their human first.

Moreover, magnetic resonance imaging has shown that the brain of a dog responds to praise as much, or even more than food.

This proves that our puppers love us more than they love food. How incredible is that?! However, such affection requires early life nurturing to take effect.

Clive Wynne claims that the future of canine science is in studying genetics, which will help unravel new discoveries about the process of domestication. He is a firm believer in the trash heap theory. The theory states that ancient dogs gathered around human dumping grounds. In the meantime, they slowly ingratiated themselves with people. This way, they established an interspecies partnership through joint hunting expeditions.

Withal, science will also help researchers to discover the exact time when the crucial mutation to the gene that controls Williams syndrome occurred. According to Wynne, this happened 8,000 – 10,000 years ago, when humans began regularly hunting alongside dogs. The author argues that these findings are significant because of their implications for dogs’ welfare.

Wynne believes that dogs love their humans, just like people love one another.

He shares:

“Our dogs give us so much, and in return they don’t ask for much. You don’t need to be buying all these fancy expensive toys and treats and goodness knows what that are available.
They just need our company, they need to be with people.”

Earth's ozone layer is HEALING! A massive decline in damaging chemicals in the atmosphere reverses troubling changes in air currents around the Southern Hemisphere

The hole in the ozone layer over Antarctica is healing.

Researchers discovered reversing changes to the flow of winds over the southern hemisphere.

The most significant impact can be seen in the southern hemisphere jet stream. It had been reportedly moving further south due to ozone depletion, but that appears to be reversing.

Scientists from the University of Colorado Boulder claim the healing is a result in part to a ban on ozone-depleting substances (ODS) in the 1980s. However, the lead author of the study, Antara Banerjee, says this change may be only temporary. She points out the impact of rising carbon dioxide levels and more ODS coming from China.

Before the 2000s, the mid-latitude upper-atmosphere wind had been gradually moving towards the South Pole. Meanwhile, another hurricane-causing airstream was expanding. This was causing changes in rainfall patterns and ocean currents in the southern hemisphere. As a result, countries like Australia suffered severe droughts.

With a range of computer simulations, researchers showed that the jet stream stopped moving south at the same time as the ozone hole began healing.

If the upper-atmosphere wind reverses its southwards movement, it could bring back rains to the affected countries, preventing further droughts.

In 2019, the Antarctic ozone hole reached its smallest annual peak on record, since it was discovered in 1982. However, this is believed to be a temporary fix. Scientists reckon this record may be caused by unusually mild temperatures in that layer of the atmosphere.

Additionally, the team working on the study confirms that there has also been a surge in ozone-depleting chemicals coming from China’s industrial regions.

Banerjee says:

“We term this a “pause” because the poleward circulation trends might resume, stay flat, or reverse. It’s the tug of war between the opposing effects of ozone recovery and rising greenhouse gases that will determine future trends.”

She adds that the major discovery her team made was proof that a global protocol like the one in Montreal that banned ODS can pause or reverse environmental harm. The whole study is published in the journal Nature.

Doctors are warning people not to put frozen potatoes in their anus

Doctors are warning against people putting frozen potatoes in their anus.

This has come due to a large number of people with hemorrhoids reportedly looking at alternative solutions on the web to fight the problem instead of seeking professional medical help.

The new “solution” consists of inserting frozen potatoes into your anus and keeping them inside for 30 minutes.

In the video below, a British doctor gives advice to a person who has struggled with the problem for five years:

According to Wales Online, an article claims:

“Here’s what you need to do: Peel a raw potato and cut into thin slices, like you do it for French fries. Put the slices into the freezer and wait until they are frozen.

Insert the frozen potato slice in your anus and leave it inside for 30 seconds. Repeat the process for three to five days. The next three to five days leave the slice inside for 30 seconds more each time.”

The article goes on:

“The potatoes have astringent properties and help relieve the pain and itchy sensation which usually happens with this condition, while the ice-cold potato constricts the blood vessels, reduces the swelling and relieves your pain instantly.”

However, experts have warned against this ludicrous solution.

According to the Metro, Doctor Diana Gall, of leading online doctor advice service Doctor-4-U, stated:

“Piles can be an irritating condition and sufferers are sometimes too embarrassed to seek professional helping, turning to old wives’ tales instead.”

She went on to say:

“There is no medical evidence that putting frozen potatoes inside the anus can help cure piles, so I would urge caution to anyone thinking of doing it.

Piles often go away on their own after a few days, but there are some tried and trusted ways to keep them at bay.

You should drink plenty of fluids and maintain a fiber-rich diet and try having regular warm baths to ease itching and pain.

If home treatments do not banish your piles, it is advised to go to your doctor and explore alternative treatments.”

But frozen potatoes appear to not be the only alternative hemorrhoid treatment being offered online. Some folks have also vouched for the power of CBD oil in treating the problem.

According to Wales Online, Reddit user Barron50Cal wrote:

“The CBD absorbed and actually reached the internal hemorrhoid.

My inflammation began to decrease, as did my pain. I can almost recognize my bottom again.”

However, doctors have in addition warned against the CBD oil as a hemorrhoid treatment because solid evidence for its effectiveness has not been provided thus far.

MD of popular UK brand CBD Armour, David Barcly, commented:

“There have been reports of CBD being a very responsive anti-inflammatory.

So one can understand why people would consider using it in this manner. It would be beneficial to have some official research into this.

As for frozen potatoes, where on earth do people get these crazy ideas from?!”

Guts UK! surveyed 800 individuals concerning their digestion, according to Kennedy News and Media, and found that half of them did not want to look for help with their issues for more than half a year.

“Guts UK found that 58% of those we asked felt embarrassed about their digestive condition/symptoms.

“Research found that 51% of patients with digestive symptoms do not seek advice for more than six months.

“Treatment is usually initially about increasing intake of water and fiber to soften the stool but if these methods are unhelpful, a referral to a specialist may be required.”

The cornea plays an important role in focusing vision. It is the outermost layer of the human eye. Currently, there are 10 million people worldwide requiring surgery to prevent corneal blindness. It is usually the result of diseases such as trachoma, an infectious eye disorder. Moreover, there are over 5 million people who suffer total blindness due to corneal scarring.

In their experimental research, experts report on how stem cells in a combination with alginate and collagen create a ‘bio-ink’.

By using a simple 3D bio-printer, the bio-ink was successfully extruded in concentric circles to form the shape of a human cornea.

The whole procedure lasts a little over 5 minutes.

What’s more, their study also shows that they are able to build a cornea that matches patients’ unique specifications.

The Professor of Tissue Engineering at Newcastle University and leader of the experiment, Che Connon, explains:

“Our unique gel – a combination of alginate and collagen – keeps the stem cells alive whilst producing a material which is stiff enough to hold its shape but soft enough to be squeezed out the nozzle of a 3D printer… Now we have a ready to use bio-ink containing stem cells allowing users to start printing tissues without having to worry about growing the cells separately.”

Moreover, he says that there will be several years before they can their 3D printed corneas for transplants.

That’s because they are still working on the experiment, and it needs to undergo further testing.

Additionally, the director of research, policy, and innovation at Fight for Sight, Dr. Neil Ebenezer, says:

“We are delighted at the success of researchers at Newcastle University in developing 3D printing of corneas using human tissue. This research highlights the significant progress that has been made in this area and this study is important in bringing us one step closer to reducing the need for donor corneas, which would positively impact some patients living with sight loss. However, it is important to note that this is still years away from potentially being available to patients and it is still vitally important that people continue to donate corneal tissue for transplant as there is a shortage within the UK.”

Why is laughter so contagious?

“We don’t laugh because we’re happy, we’re happy because we laugh.”

– William James

Why do we pick up the emotions of others with such ease? It appears that emotions can be highly contagious. For instance, one person’s laughter is immediately transferred to another person. The reason may be that powerful emotions synchronize the brain activity of different people as researched by Finland’s Aalto University and Turku PET Centre.

When we look at other people smiling or laughing a corresponding emotional response is often triggered in us.

This could be a basic element of social interaction: synching a shared natural emotional state in all members of a group whose brains process what they experience in the environment around them in a similar way.

The study calculated brain activity in people through functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) while they were watching short uplifting and unpleasant films. They discovered that powerful and negative emotions synchronized the subjects’ emotion processing networks in the frontal and midline regions of the brain while strongly arousing films synchronized brain activities supporting the networks of vision, attention, sense, and touch.

Adjunct Professor Lauri Nummenmaa of Aalto University had this to say:

“Sharing others’ emotional states provides the observers a somatosensory and neural framework that facilitates understanding others’ intentions and actions and allows to ‘tune in’ or ‘sync’ with them. Such automatic tuning facilitates social interaction and group processes.

The results have major implications for current neural models of human emotions and group behaviour, but also deepen our understanding of mental disorders involving abnormal socioemotional processing.”

Contagious Laughter

The research can perhaps be compared to another study at the University College (UCL) and Imperial College London which revealed a possible mechanism for contagious laughter. Positive sounds such as laughter elicit a response in the area of a person’s brain activated when we smile as if preparing facial muscles to laugh.

Here is an example given in the study:

“Cricket commentator Jonathan Agnew’s description of Ian Botham’s freak dismissal, falling over his own stumps ‘he couldn’t quite get his leg over’ was all it took to send himself and the late Brian Johnston into paroxysms of laughter.”

Senior research fellow at the Institute of Cognitive Neuroscience, Doctor Sophie Scott said the following:

“It seems that it’s absolutely true that ‘laugh and the whole world laughs with you’. We’ve known for some time now that when we are talking to someone, we often mirror their behaviour, copying the words they use and mimicking their gestures. Now we’ve shown that the same appears to apply to laughter, too – at least at the level of the brain.”

Test subjects were given to listen to different sounds while measuring their brain responses through fMRI. Some of the sounds were positive, for instance, the sounds of laughter or triumph. Others were negative, such as retching or screaming. All of the sounds triggered a response in the brain’s premotor cortical region, which readies facial muscles to respond accordingly. However, the people responded more to positive sounds, revealing that these were in fact more contagious than the negative ones.

The researchers believe this explains why we respond to laughing and cheering with an involuntary smile.

Sophie Scott stated:

“We usually encounter positive emotions, such as laughter or cheering, in group situations, whether watching a comedy programme with family or a football game with friends. This response in the brain, automatically priming us to smile or laugh, provides a way of mirroring the behaviour of others, something which helps us interact socially. It could play an important role in building strong bonds between individuals in a group.”

TV show uses virtual reality to 'reunite' mother with her little daughter who died in 2016

A South Korean TV show reunited a weeping mother with her dead seven-year-old daughter through virtual reality (VR) so she could deal with the pain.

Meeting You utilizes virtual reality technology to simulate the appearance of dead relatives for people who are struggling with the loss of their loved ones.

The participant is given touch-sensitive gloves and a VR headset thanks to which they can see, feel and even hear the person they have lost.

In the newest episode, Jang Ji-sung can be seen reuniting with her daughter, Nayeon, in a relaxed magical world, where she is playing.

Nayeon passed away in 2016 following a rare illness.

Recreating via a computer the way Nayeon acts looks and talks, Jang is seen in tears as she’s asked if she ever thinks about her little girl, to which she responded: ‘All the time.’

Nayeon then says: ‘I missed mom a lot,’ and the pair hold hands and play together.

She then gives her mum a flower and says:

‘Mommy, you can see that I’m not hurting anymore, right?’

At the end of the surreal meeting, Nayeon drifts off into sleep and allows her dear mother to say farewell.

The touching encounter was filmed while the mother’s husband and two children watch on with tears in their eyes.

Later, Jang described her experience in her blog:

‘Three years later, I now think I should love her more than miss her and feel sick so that I can be confident when I meet her later.

‘I hope many people will remember Nayeon after watching the show.’

She continued saying that she hoped her experience will help other families dealing with the death of a loved one cope with their loss.

The show is part of the program of the Minhwa Broadcasting Corporation (MBC), South Korea’s most prominent network.

Artificial Organs: Let us welcome an era where transplants are obsolete

No More Heart Transplants

All around the globe, the number of patients in need of organ transplants is often higher than that of people willing to donate – partly because some of the most in-demand organs can only be donated after a person has passed away.

Recent data from the British Heart Foundation (BHF) revealed that the list of patients waiting for a heart transplant in the UK has grown by 162% in ten years.

Now, half a century after the first successful heart transplant, experts in the field believe an era where organ transplantation will no longer be necessary is just around the corner.

“I think within ten years we won’t see any more heart transplants, except for people with congenital heart damage, where only a new heart will do,” Stephen Westaby, from the John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford, told The Telegraph.

Of course, Westaby did not want to come across as being ungrateful for all the human lives saved by real organ transplants. He said he is a “great supporter of cardiac transplantation.” Nevertheless, fresh technological innovations in medicine may offer alternatives that could potentially save more time, financial resources, and most importantly, lives.

“I think the combination of heart pumps and stem cells has the potential to be a good alternative which could help far more people,” Westaby added.

Enter the Era of Artificial Organs

A controversial but full of potential medical advance has continued to show enormous potential; the use of stem cells. It is known that applications for stem cells are in part limited, but that has more to do with ethical considerations than limitations of science. But despite this, the studies that have been done with stem cells have proven that it is entirely possible to grow organs in a laboratory, which could then be used to save human lives.

Thanks to science we can also produce artificial organs by using 3D printing. When applied to medicine, the process is referred to as 3D bioprinting – and its achievements have already been quite impressive.

So far, scientists have been able to 3D-bioprint a number of organs, which includes a thyroid gland, a tibia replacement that has already been implanted into a patient, as well as heart cells that have an actual beat.

These organs have been made functional thanks to refinements to the type of bioink; one of the numerous improvements to the process we should see in the near future, as there is now an institution dedicated to improving 3D bioprinting techniques.

Another innovation that makes the production of synthetic organs a reality includes a method for growing bioartificial kidneys.

For his part, Westaby is involved in a number of projects working to keep on improving the process: one of which uses stem cells to reverse heart tissue damage, which would improve the quality of life for patients having to deal with coronary bypass.

In addition, Westaby is working on the development of improved hardware for these kinds of surgical procedures, including low-priced titanium mechanical heart pumps.

Together with 3D bioprinting, these kinds of innovations could easily become the answer to donor shortages. The future of regenerative medicine is affordable artificial organs that could reliably be printed for patients in need.

Men are funnier than women, new research finds

A study has come to the conclusion that men are funnier than women.

The researchers looked at the results of a variety of other studies in which subjects were asked to rate both men and women’s humor – without knowing their sex.

The study found that 63 percent of males were funnier than the average female.

The research looked at regular people rather than established comedians. However, Marina Bye of the comedy duo Siblings says such studies feel “unnecessary”.

“With comedy that’s the last thing you want,” she said, speaking to Radio 1 Newsbeat.

She is concerned it could put off women from trying their hand at professional comedy.

“You want the worst and the best comedians to try because you never know. This study will cripple bravery.

“I really think it’s unnecessary to do this study. They could’ve done something progressive.”

Researchers from the University of North Carolina and Aberyswyth University looked into 28 studies that measured how funny around 5000 people were.

They wanted to test whether the “men are funnier than women” claim was in fact valid.

Doctor Gil Greengross wrote the following for Psychology Today:

“This stereotype is shared by both men and women – but of course, just because it exists does not mean it is true.”

In the large number of the studies they went through, men and women were asked to write a humorous caption to accompany a cartoon, after which judges rater their comic prowess without being aware of their gender.

Dr. Gil said the results discovered that,

“to the best of our knowledge, on average, men appear to have higher humor production ability than women”.

In an interview for Radio 1 Newsbeat he said:

“To clarify, the whole thing is not about ‘women are not funny’… obviously there are some very funny stand-up comedians and I know many female comedians, some personally.

“Sara Pascoe, for example, she’s a great comedian and she’s probably funnier than 99% of all males in the world… it’s just that on average we find there’s a difference.”

He notes that evidence shows humor plays a “major role in mating”.

The lecturer explained that women tend to want a sense of humor in a partner as it is “strongly correlated with intelligence”.

“Men, on the other hand, prefer women who laugh at their humour.

That means that over our evolutionary history, men likely had to compete harder with other men to impress women with their sense of humour.”

Maddy Bye of Siblings, says she finds the research “frustrating but also funny”.

“Being in the comedy world I don’t think we’ve done a gig in the last three years where there wasn’t an equal amount of men and women on the bill.

There are so many amazing male and female comedy shows. I don’t know why they’re trying to make it a scientific fact that women aren’t funny.”

Maddy believes being a woman in comedy is “better than it was before” but it is still a “man’s world”.

She remembers giving out fliers for their show at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival and a woman told her it looked alright but her partner does not “think women are funny”.

“The stereotype does exist but our way of dealing with it is to just do comedy.”

Take a look at the late Christopher Hitchens’ 2 cents on the matter in the video below.

Shockingly life-like android robots are entering the workforce and soon may take your job

A Russian startup company has revealed a new model of android robots it wishes to sell to businesses with heavy customer service loads, like airports, museums, and banks.

Russian tech company Promobot has its headquarters in Pennsylvania, and Robo-C is the ‘world’s first humanoid android, which not only simulates the appearance of a person but also is able to integrate into business processes.’

Robo-C is able to mimic human facial expressions and can realistically move its lips, eyes, eyebrows and other facial muscles, thanks to 16 moving parts, and can learn a  total of 600 facial expressions.

The robots can also talk directly to users and even come with an Artificial Intelligence which contains 100,000 modules of speech, according to CNBC.

A piece costs between $20,000 and $50,000 depending on the choice of customization.

Robo-C has been build to cover the needs of a number of commercial uses, including housework.

Promobot has currently four Robo-C orders, one to serve at a government services center by scanning passports.

See the Robo-C in action in the video below.

Another piece will be delivered to a robot expo, and two others are being constructed for a Middle-eastern family to resemble the mother and father.

Oleg Kivokutrzev, Promobot co-founder, had the following to say:

‘The key moment in development [of Robo-C] is the digitization of personality and the creation of an individual appearance,’ he told CNBC. ‘As a result, digital immortality, which we can offer our customers.’

One of the company’s competitors is ANA Holding’s Avatar division, who see the android field as something that could transform the entire economy.

‘What we’re creating is an Uber platform for robots,’ ANA’s Akira Fukabori told CNBC.

‘They’re not made for a specific use—that’s how they’re different. We are developing robots as infrastructure. People can just avatar in to the robot they want to use.’

‘Teachers can avatar in to classrooms and doctors can avatar in to hospitals, or you can use one to go shopping. You decide what to do, and these are just the tools to let you do that.’

They even made an Einstein-bot.

Do you think this technology is a step in the right direction for humanity, or do you believe trouble will inevitably follow suit as AI becomes more intelligent?

An actor impersonates 20 Celebrities with deepfake technology altering his face: Astonishing Video

An actor collaborated with deepfake artist Sham00k in order to make celebrity impressions with a more realistic touch.

Jim Meskimen and Sham00k made a YouTube video showing the results of their partnership, and they are truly impressive. While Meskimen impersonated the voices himself, deepfake software applied the facial features of 20 Hollywood actors, such as Nicholas Cage, Morgan Freeman, Robert De Niro, Robin Williams, and even former President George W. Bush.

Meskimen’s talent as an impressionist is surely undeniable but so is the capability of the deepfake software. It just shows how far technology has come in blurring the lines between what is real and what isn’t. Nevertheless, it still takes a lot of work. According to Sham00k, the completion of Meskimen’s video took more than 250 hours of work, 1200 hours of material, 300000 pictures and nearly one terabyte of data to create.

Sham00k released a video showing the techniques and datasets he used to accomplish what he did:

Lawmakers, as well as tech companies, have taken note of the spreading of this technology, and researchers have begun developing tools to spot deepfakes. Google has released a number of 3000 deepfakes in an effort to help the cause. Microsoft, MIT, and Facebook are all working to fight the fakes. Reddit has banned AI-generated deepfake pornography, and the state of California now allows its residents to sue people who use the software to put their image in porn without getting permission first. While the world is working on raising its defenses against fake news, deepfakes are making their way as the next frontier.

What are your thoughts on the subject of deepfakes?
