Sea turtles have hatched on a beach deserted due to COVID-19 quarantine

Dozens of endangered sea turtles have hatched on a beach in Brazil being deserted due to the coronavirus quarantine.

Usually, the beaches in Paulista, Brazil, are filled with people witnessing the magical scene where baby turtles are being born. Sadly, this year the access to the coastline was forbidden by state governor Paulo Câmara. He ordered a partial shutdown in the area. Residents are being urged to stay home in an attempt to block the spread of the virus.

Nearly a hundred baby hawksbill sea turtles broke free from their shells and took their very first steps on March 22.

Unfortunately, there was almost no one around to witness this incredible moment. Only a few government workers were lucky enough to be at the beach and capture the baby turtles making their way to the sea.

In a statement, the City Hall of Paulista says that the hatching of the eggs and the first contact of the animals with the ocean was only possible thanks to monitoring work carried out by technicians of the Urban Sustainability Center.

The WWF considers hawksbill sea turtles as a critically endangered species.

Thankfully, Brazil’s Tamar conservation project works for the restoration of the species. Additionally, the project contributes to the restorations of the olive ridley sea turtle, the loggerhead sea turtle, and the leatherback sea turtle. All four species of turtle protected by the Tamar conservation project can be found along Brazil’s coastline.

What’s unique about the hawksbills is that they can grow up to 110cm (about 43in) and can weigh 85kg (187lbs). They are strongly connected with coral reef areas. Sadly, these sea turtles often become victims of human actions, as they can be caught accidentally in ghost nets or gillnets left for hours to catch fish. They are also in great danger of being snatched by birds or crushed by beachgoers after hatching. However, due to the recent lockdown regime, those threats are minimized.

Herbert Andrade, Environmental Manager at Paulista, shares:

“In all, 291 sea turtles were born on the coast of Paulista in 2020, with 87 green turtles and 204 hawksbill turtles. This time, due to preventive measures against the new coronavirus, the population was unable to closely monitor the birth.”

According to The Guardian, Paulista’s environmental secretary, Roberto Couto, said the turtles usually lay their eggs from January each year, before the hatchlings emerge in April or May. He added:

“It’s really beautiful because you can see the exact instant they come out of the eggs and… watch their little march across the beach. It’s marvellous. It’s a wonderful, extraordinary feeling. This time, because of coronavirus, we couldn’t even tell people it was happening.”

WWF believes that sea turtles are the ‘living representatives’ of reptiles that have existed on Earth and traveled our seas for the last 100 million years.

This proves these creatures are a fundamental link in marine ecosystems. They are also amazing for maintaining the health of coral reefs and seagrass beds.

Penguins Meet Beluga Whales During Coronavirus Aquarium Lockdown

Chicago: Penguins at the Shedd Aquarium have been let to roam around and explore their surroundings after it shut its doors to the outside world due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

A 32-year-old penguin named Wellington and his friends were allowed to experience life on the outside of their confines, as they went on an exciting trip, which included a visit to Shedd’s underwater viewing area, home to a number of beluga whales.

Posted by Shedd Aquarium on Sunday, March 29, 2020

The aquarium posted videos of the happy penguin and his pals visiting the three belugas named Kayavak, Mauyak and little Annik during the weekend.

“They may have met some animals at the aquarium that are just as curious as they are,” the museum wrote.

Posted by Shedd Aquarium on Sunday, March 29, 2020

The belugas suddenly stopped their swim to take a look at the happy penguins.

Posted by Shedd Aquarium on Sunday, March 29, 2020

“The whales, including Annik the calf born last year, collectively gathered at the window to take in Wellington and the other birds, who stared back as they waddled back and forth,” the aquarium said.

Posted by Shedd Aquarium on Sunday, March 29, 2020

Belugas live in the northern hemisphere, so the nature of the penguin is foreign to them as all species of penguins live in the southern hemisphere.

“That being said, the latest penguin field trip seemed just as enriching for the belugas as it was for the birds,” the aquarium said.

Aren’t they cute?

And here’s Wellington meeting his new friends.

Earth's ozone layer is HEALING! A massive decline in damaging chemicals in the atmosphere reverses troubling changes in air currents around the Southern Hemisphere

The hole in the ozone layer over Antarctica is healing.

Researchers discovered reversing changes to the flow of winds over the southern hemisphere.

The most significant impact can be seen in the southern hemisphere jet stream. It had been reportedly moving further south due to ozone depletion, but that appears to be reversing.

Scientists from the University of Colorado Boulder claim the healing is a result in part to a ban on ozone-depleting substances (ODS) in the 1980s. However, the lead author of the study, Antara Banerjee, says this change may be only temporary. She points out the impact of rising carbon dioxide levels and more ODS coming from China.

Before the 2000s, the mid-latitude upper-atmosphere wind had been gradually moving towards the South Pole. Meanwhile, another hurricane-causing airstream was expanding. This was causing changes in rainfall patterns and ocean currents in the southern hemisphere. As a result, countries like Australia suffered severe droughts.

With a range of computer simulations, researchers showed that the jet stream stopped moving south at the same time as the ozone hole began healing.

If the upper-atmosphere wind reverses its southwards movement, it could bring back rains to the affected countries, preventing further droughts.

In 2019, the Antarctic ozone hole reached its smallest annual peak on record, since it was discovered in 1982. However, this is believed to be a temporary fix. Scientists reckon this record may be caused by unusually mild temperatures in that layer of the atmosphere.

Additionally, the team working on the study confirms that there has also been a surge in ozone-depleting chemicals coming from China’s industrial regions.

Banerjee says:

“We term this a “pause” because the poleward circulation trends might resume, stay flat, or reverse. It’s the tug of war between the opposing effects of ozone recovery and rising greenhouse gases that will determine future trends.”

She adds that the major discovery her team made was proof that a global protocol like the one in Montreal that banned ODS can pause or reverse environmental harm. The whole study is published in the journal Nature.

Animals Start Roaming The Cities While People Quarantine Themselves At Home

As more and more countries are put under total lockdown, people often distract themselves with social media, films, or books. And while some governments encourage people to spend time in nature (they still must keep their distance from others), many totally isolate themselves from the outside world.

However, nature, cannot be stopped by the coronavirus and some unexpected consequences of the quarantine are starting to manifest.

In countries like Italy, Japan, and Thailand, people are starting to see wild and non-wild animals alike walking in the streets.

In Japan, deer were seen roaming the streets to look for food. Normally, the park (Nara Park), is filled with tourists, and the Sika deer are one of the main attractions.

People would normally buy crackers meant especially for deer feeding, but as the tourists disappeared, the deer seem to have decided to come out of their home park and search for sustenance.

The locals of Nara, reported seeing deer that normally don’t leave the park come out into the city.

Numerous pictures and videos of the deer in the streets of Nara have been shared on the web, with people’s reactions ranging from astonished to shocked.

Twitter user okadennis, who shared some photos of the deer said he found the whole thing amusing.

Another video recording shows a large group of hungry monkeys desperately searching for food in Lopburi, Thailand.

Pictures of wild boars walking around the streets of Italy also emerged online.

Italy is perhaps one of the countries with the most severe virus situation at the moment, with hundreds of people dying every day.

People on social media have posted photographs of sheep, boars and a horse roaming the streets of Italy.

Most of the users were having a great time with the whole situation despite the horrific circumstances during which it all occurred.

Magnificent Rare Iridescent Clouds Captured In Siberia's Mountains

If you are an admirer of our beautiful universe, then you would love this unique spectacle captured on a Siberian mountain.

Photographer Svetlana Kazina was fortunate enough to catch this rare phenomenon on camera.

“The clouds in my photos are so thin that they look more like lace,” Svetlana says.

Svetlana, who resides in the Altai Mountains, captured these awe-inspiring images of the shining sky over Siberia’s highest peak on Belukha mountain (4506m/14783ft).

The pictures show magical clouds reminiscent of soap bubbles in their various colors.

Cloud iridescence or irisation is a rainbowy optical wonder that occurs inside a cloud and aligns with the general proximity of the Moon or Sun. It can be referred to as a kind of photometeor.

Posted by Госиндекс on Tuesday, December 17, 2019

Sometimes a rainbow-looking cloud may appear. They are very rare, but some people have seen them, and sometimes they are fortunate enough to capture them on camera. They are the result of incredibly small ice crystals or water drops in the air, which, in turn, cause the light to spread out.

‘I pictured this beauty over Siberia’s highest peak, Belukha, early in the morning’, said Svetlana. ‘The wind at this height was so strong that the cloud ‘lace’ changed every second.’

Siberia’s Altai Mountains are home to some of Russia’s most breathtaking scenery, a true marvel for travelers who wish to run away from modern society.

The mountains were formed in the midst of the great orogenic up hurts that happened between 500 and 300 million years ago and were falling apart, over geological time, into a plateau with summit heights.

One can only imagine how it feels to be there, and to witness these majestic sights in person. The photographs are fantastic, but seeing it all with your own eyes must be heaven.

Hello, Spring! 5 great reasons to be happy spring is finally here

The winds of March have finally brought spring back to us.

This magical season gives us the sensation of awakening, revitalizing, and rejuvenating like no other. The dazzling tulips and daffodils are gracefully blooming. The sweet cherries and strawberries are adding that special flavor to our mom’s Sunday pies. Everything around us seems like a beautiful poem.

Isn’t there something magical about the way the days are slowly getting longer than the nights? When all the snow melts and the winter cold remains just a memory, we feel that spring has finally arrived at our doorsteps. Don’t get this the wrong way, winter is a lovely season too. After all, if we had no winter, the arrival of the spring wouldn’t be so alluring.

Here are a few wonderful reasons why we should be happy spring is finally here.

1. There is much more daylight.

As we listen to the cheering songs of the birds in springtime, we get to see a lot more of the beautiful daylight too. In spring, the nights are gradually getting shorter, which gives us more light hours to get things done. One of the greatest things about it is that when you wake up to go to work, the sun is already shining bright, and your body knows the new day has begun. This gives you a little drive to be more productive and to actually enjoy your job. Those extra hours of sunlight can be an absolute mood-booster.

2. You can enjoy being outdoors again.

Spring comes with clear skies, tons of sunlight, and warmer temperatures. While the winter wonderland is amazing to look at, sometimes it can be too darn freezing outside to truly appreciate its beauty. On the contrary, springtime gives us excellent weather to go outside and have a nice walk or meet up with friends under the stars. What’s more, outdoor workouts are possible again! For those who would enjoy a run in the park much more than the treadmill at the gym, spring is just the perfect time to do it.

3. Springtime boosts your creativity.

The warmer weather and the longer days are definitely great mood-boosters. However, our mood is not the only thing springtime affects. Spring gives us the opportunity to spend more time outside, which automatically recharges our batteries and upraises our creativity. Being outdoors gives us the chance to observe the blooming nature around us, which oftentimes promotes tons of visionary and creative thoughts.

4. Flowers are literally everywhere.

When the winter snow melts away, it’s finally time for the gorgeous spring flowers to bloom. Perhaps, there is not a single person in this world whose soul doesn’t spark a little bit seeing a field of tulips, or a beautifully arranged bouquet of freshly picked hyacinths. Moreover, flowers get their way into everything else too. In springtime, the delicate floral patterns take over our clothes, our accessories, our home decoration, and basically everything with a surface that can be fully covered in flowers. And the greatest thing is, even if the floral motives go out of style in the summer, they will surely be back the next spring.

5. Spring makes you healthier.

The sunlight we all love so much does a lot more than making us feel happier and boosting our productiveness. It also triggers our bodies to naturally produce vitamin D, which keeps our bones and our teeth strong. What’s more, vitamin D also supports our immune system, our brain workflow, and our insulin levels, which is essential for diabetes management. Only a few minutes of exposure to sunlight is enough for us to naturally get a proper daily dose of our vitamins.

How do you feel about this wonderful transition between seasons this time of the year? We would love to hear from you in the comment section!

We apologize for the misinformation and we will do our best to avoid such mistakes in the future. Thank you for your patience.

The complete lockdown of cities, quarantines, and strict social boundaries due to the coronavirus has all been great news for mother nature.

Posted by Epicalyptic on Wednesday, March 18, 2020

As per Epicalyptic‘s Facebook page, 14 elephants who apparently walked into a village in Yunan, China searching for food, came across 30 kilograms (66 pounds) of corn wine and drank every last drop of it.

The group was later found drunk and sleeping at a close by tea garden, with sweet smiles on all their faces.

They wrote the following:

“While humans carry out social distancing, a group of 14 elephants broke into a village in the Yunan province, looking for corn and other food. They ended up drinking 30kgs of corn wine and got so drunk that they fell asleep in a nearby tea garden.”

The drunken elephants’ smiles just show us how special they are and how much we still need to do to restore their natural habitats so they don’t have to desperately search for food in villages and cities.

And that is why, no matter how much good social distancing is doing, there’s much more to be done.

We must plant more trees and stop erasing nature with endless construction work.

The coronavirus crisis may be a clear sign to start taking more action on behalf of our only home – planet Earth.

Bear, Lion And Tiger Brothers Have Been Living Side By Side For 15 Years

Friendly bonds between different species of animals are not uncommon, so birds and dogs, cats and foxes, giraffes and ostriches can be seen together.

However, in this story, we will talk about the unique friendship between bears, tigers, and lions.

noahs-ark.org

The trio consists of an American black bear, an African lion, and a Bengal tiger. This special friendship is truly rare because they are all coming from different continents. But this is an example, that no matter the distance, if given the chance they can live side by side.

noahs-ark.org

The Baloo bear, the lion Leo, and the tiger Shere Khan have spent 15 years living in harmony at Noah’s Ark Animal Shelter in Georgia.

noahs-ark.org

They were rescued back in 2001 from the basement of a US home during a police raid on drugs, and are now refereed to as BLT.

noahs-ark.org

They were kept in a basement in Atlanta in horrible conditions and Baloo even had to undergo surgery to remove an ingrowing harness that had not been in the right place while he was growing up. They were rescued from a terrifying case of animal abuse.

The trio was too injured to be rehabilitated and brought back to the wilderness, but it seemed like they were more than happy to live side by side at the sanctuary.

noahs-ark.org

From that day, they were separated only when Baloo was in surgery, while they spend the rest of their joyful time together.

noahs-ark.org

The fact that their journey began in such an unfortunate way and from three different continents does not bother them and they are currently living as a family in a happy retirement home.

You can see them in action in the video below.

The Giethoorn village, also known as the “Venice of the Netherlands” is a mesmerizing place that was established in 1230. Many of us dream about living in such a place, especially because of its clean air and magical view.

Giethoorn has no roads, meaning that modern transportation is non-existent there.
