6 Keys to Maintain Emotional Stability

Author: Chase Holik

Emotional stability is one of those characteristics that we all think we have, but we also all struggle with at times. There are different ways to define emotional stability, but sometimes we don’t know how to achieve it.

The mind is an amazing thing that sometimes is hard to control. Your mood can depend on how emotionally stable you are at any given time. And just because you are in a good mood for most of the day doesn’t mean that you are a stable person emotionally. Take a look at these few reasons how you can find out if you are emotionally stable, by realizing what those people don’t do.

1. Don’t Get Caught up in Drama

Unnecessary drama is one of the main causes in people becoming emotionally stable. Even if there isn’t a lot of drama surrounding you personally, you can still be affected if you listen to the gossip all the time. You will start thinking about what people are saying about you behind your back and creating stories in your head. Do yourself a favor and avoid drama at all costs.

2. Live in the Present

People who are emotionally stable tend to live in the present and not think too much about the past. People who struggle with emotional stability like to think about past negative experiences every time a positive one comes up. Instead of looking toward the past when something bad happens to you, look to the future and know that you can change your situation with a little bit of work.

3. Don’t Assume that Attacks are Directed at You

This goes along with avoiding drama. If someone is angry or upset about something, don’t assume that you had something to do with it. Alternatively, if someone ignores you when they usually don’t, it doesn’t mean that they are doing it intentionally. People don’t have time to always think about you and make sure you are happy, so the quicker you are able to understand that, the quicker you will be able to find yourself emotionally stable.

4. Respond Instead of React

Emotionally unstable people generally react negatively in situations instead of remaining calm. A lot of that has to do with their personality, but it also shows signs of instability. If you get so angry that quickly, then you must have some kind of negativity built up. The emotionally stable people will take a moment to think about the situation and respond appropriately instead of making widespread generalizations that may not be true.

5. Understand that You are not Perfect

Even though some people may think they are perfect, they are not. It’s those people that think they are perfect that are more likely to be more emotionally unstable than you. They are just relying on their ego to get them by and hope that other people buy in to what they are selling themselves for. Instead of pretending to be perfect like them, just know that you aren’t perfect and that you are a better person because of it.

6. Don’t hate Yourself

Hating yourself is the worst thing you can do, in more ways than one. If you judge yourself based on others, you are likely going to feel sorry for yourself. Just know that you can change the way you think about yourself with a little bit of work. Turn negatives into positives in your mind, but most of all, respect yourself. If you have a history of hating yourself, then you won’t be able to change that overnight. It will be a long process, but it will be the most worthwhile one that you can undertake.
