Canadian researchers decided that they wanted to see the person behind the comment when it comes to trolls, so they conducted two studies involving 1200 people. The idea was to see if trolls could be connected to the Dark Tetrad of personality, things like Machiavellianism, sadism, and psychopathy. And wouldn’t you know it, their study found that Dark Tetrad scores were strongest among the people who said that trolling was their preferred activity online.
